Art & Science of Playing Singing Bowls & Gongs

Singing bowls and gongs are highly sensitive instruments—the quality of the experience depends not only on which instrument you use, but on how, where, when and with what intention it is played. In this module, you will learn to consciously produce different qualities of sound, resonance and vibration, control their intensity and progression, and understand their appropriate applications within meditation and wellness practice. The focus is not simply on playing an instrument, but on developing the sensitivity, listening skills and technical control required to create intentional therapeutic sound experiences.

What You Will Learn

✅ Mastering the Art of Striking – where and how to strike different areas of singing bowls and gongs to produce clear, stable and resonant sounds

✅ Producing & Recognizing Different Sound Qualities – creating and distinguishing deep and high tones, soft meditative sounds, strong vibrations, sustained resonance, harmonics and traditionally described male and female sound qualities, and understanding their intended applications

✅ Mallet, Striker, Hand & Water Techniques – selecting the appropriate mallet according to instrument size, type and desired sound, while exploring hand-based and water techniques where appropriate

✅ Volume, Rhythm & Striking Intervals – controlling intensity, timing, repetition and the space between strikes to prevent overstimulation and create a balanced progression of sound and silence

✅ Rim Playing, Resonance & Harmonics – controlling pressure, speed and movement around the rim to create sustained tones and explore fundamental tones, overtones and harmonic textures

✅ Therapeutic, Meditative & Energetic Sound Techniques – learning different playing approaches used in your methodology for relaxation, meditation, chakra activation and balancing, vibrational work and supporting quieter mental states

✅ Playing for Brainwave & Deep-Relaxation Practices – understanding how rhythm, repetition, dynamics and silence can be structured for sound-based relaxation and meditation, while recognizing the limits of frequency-specific scientific claims

✅ Gong Playing & Sound Progression – striking zones, mallet control, building and releasing resonance, creating different tonal textures, and learning when to increase, soften, pause and finally allow sound to dissolve into silence

The goal is not simply to make the bowl or gong produce sound, but to learn how to make every strike conscious, purposeful and appropriate to the practice.
