Psychophysiological Effects of Yoga

  • Psychophysiology of Asana, Pranayama, Bandha and Mudra

Psychophysiology of Asana, Pranayama, Bandha and Mudra

Explore how traditional yoga practices influence the relationship between body, breath, nervous system, mind and awareness. This module connects classical yogic understanding with modern physiology, helping students explain both how a practice is performed and how it may affect the practitioner.

✅ Mind–Body Foundations of Yoga: Understand posture as an expression of physical and mental states, the role of sensory feedback and homeostasis, and how conscious movement, breathing and attention can influence relaxation, concentration and self-awareness.

✅ Psychophysiology of Asana: Study how cultural, meditative and relaxation postures influence muscles, joints, proprioception, balance, breathing mechanics, circulation and nervous-system activity. Explore muscular activation and release, complementary postures, posture maintenance and the relationship between physical steadiness and mental stability.

✅ Psychophysiology of Pranayama: Examine how breathing rate, depth, rhythm and retention affect the diaphragm, respiratory system, cardiovascular responses, autonomic nervous system, attention and emotional state. Learn to distinguish calming, balancing and stimulating pranayama practices and apply them progressively and safely.

✅ Psychophysiology of Bandhas and Mudras: Explore how Mula, Uddiyana and Jalandhara Bandha coordinate posture, breath, abdominal pressure and neuromuscular awareness. Study how mudras combine position, sensory feedback, breathing and focused attention to support concentration, meditation and the traditional direction of prana.

✅ Integrated Application, Safety and Teaching: Learn to combine asana, pranayama, bandha and mudra according to the purpose and readiness of the student. Understand sequencing, benefits, limitations, contraindications and safe progression while clearly distinguishing traditional energetic explanations from modern physiological interpretations.**

Learning Outcome

By completing this module, students will be able to explain how yoga practices may influence the body and mind, select practices for different physical and mental objectives, and teach them with greater scientific understanding, traditional awareness and professional responsibility.
